For many people looking to start a blog, the motivations associated with the pursuit involve autonomy, freedom, financial reward and a general sense of building purpose with one’s life.
Shit, I know that’s why I got involved with this game.
Like a lot of people — I was sick and tired of the rigmarole of the 9–5. I couldn’t stand a boss who wasn’t competent (and really just played the political game well) telling me how I was to perform my tasks, roles and responsibilities.
I was done listening to people who had less of a clue of what direction to go than I did.

So many things have improved with my life since making the deliberate choice to write and [more importantly] share it with the world.
Even if your ultimate goal isn’t to leave the 9–5, build a financial income, and make a potentially global impact with your voice, building a triumphant blog is paramount to your future success in life.

You’ll miss out on the dynamic opportunities of the changing economy

Some people have called me a “doomsday signaler.”
In the near future, millions of jobs are going to be lost due to the introduction of automation into the marketplace. According to reports, approximately 78 million American jobs could be killed due to automation by the year 2030.
This is going to have a profound impact on the American worker that we haven’t seen since the industrial revolution (which of course in this case, is going to take the opposite impact).
The marketplace is going to put an emphasis on creative jobs. These jobs will remain more secure over the course of the days to come as opposed to the more monotonous job — such as data entry, passenger transport, telemarketing — which will be the first to go.
Author of the seminal book “Sapiens” (Which I HIGHLY recommend checking out) Yuval Harari weighed in on this topic during his appearance at the 2018 DBS Asian Insights Conference when he noted, “It is quite certain that a lot jobs will disappear, especially the more monotonous or repetitive ones,” he later goes one with, “Jobs that require a higher degree of creativity will be safer.”
The “traditional route” of success — that being do well in grade school and high school so you can get into a “good” university. In that university, do “good” work so you can be recruited out of school. From there, you can get a “good” introductory job that offers a scalable ladder of success and increase in income. From there — have “good” sex with your partner so you can produce a “good” family and ride off into the rising sunset.
Okay… I may have exaggerated on the last two steps of the “good” life.
But I think you get my point.
Going forward — doing good isn’t enough. You are going to need to be creative and sought after in the new economy.
Writing, and putting those thoughts online for the world to see is a great way of establishing and promoting those creative skills. Even if you don’t create a blog for the writing content, this will do you well.
- Perhaps you’re a photographer — using your blog to showcase your creative skills in picture-taking will be evident.
- You can use the blog as a platform to promote your skills as a music producer.
- You can use your blog as a portfolio of your graphic design skills — the marketplace will forever need the human touch of design.
In building and maintaining a blog — you are going through real-time training of what the future is going to need.
You’ll miss out on multiple-streams of income opportunities
Passive income has long been touted the “Holy Grail” for individuals looking to free up their time — untethering the cord of daily duties and responsibilities from the potential to generate healthy monthly revenues.
The image is grandiose — you wake up everyone morning to first gaze upon your silky-skinned lover, than to peer into your bank account and see the vast influx of payments that required little-to-no work on your part.
From there you’re able to leave your restrictive (both geographically and creatively) job, throw up two middle fingers to your boss and traverse the wide and beautiful globe.

The opportunities for learning and growth are literally endless…
Just like the old saying goes,
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago — the second best time is now”
The same goes for starting and nurturing your blog (hold 20 years for 10…).
